Are wooden tabletops difficult to maintain?

faq-arrow

No, a tabletop in solid wood is incredibly durable, and if only you remember to apply oil and treat it properly, it may last for decades.

If you are in doubt about whether your tabletop needs oil, you can do the drop test; pour a few drops of water on the countertop and wait a few minutes. If the water penetrates into the tree, then the countertop needs oil. If the water forms beads on top of the table, it is not necessary yet. Always remember to do the first oil treatment right after assembling the table.

In addition, wood has the advantage that, unlike most other materials, it can easily be repaired. That is, if a small scratch has appeared on your tabletop, you can use some sandpaper and oil to remove the damage* easily (see how to in our care instructions). And if – after years of use – the tabletop has become a little worn, you can even grind down the entire tabletop and, after a new application of oil, enjoy the beautiful appearance of a seemingly brand-new tabletop. In this way, a solid wooden tabletop can easily last a full life and be maintained as needed. Wood is a unique natural material — it’s durable, renewable, and sustainable.

*Please note that repairing black, mocha or varnished tabletops require a different kind of repair and care routine — read more in our care instructions.

How long does a wooden tabletop last?

faq-arrow

It can last for many decades. With the right care and treatment, it can last a whole lifetime or more

How often should I treat my tabletop with oil?

faq-arrow

It depends on the type of wood and how much light, heat, and water the tabletop is exposed to. It can vary a lot, and that’s why it’s important to apply oil to the tabletop whenever it’s needed. You can easily test the need for an oil treatment by putting a few drops of water on the tabletop and seeing if they form beads or penetrate the wood. If the water penetrates into the wood, the tabletop should be treated with oil.

Should I treat my countertop with oil after assembly?

faq-arrow

Yes, to ensure optimal protection of the tabletop, it should be treated with oil about a week after assembly, after which oil is applied as needed.

Where can I buy the right oil?

faq-arrow

You can buy our specially made natural oils in our online shop. In most cases, neutral oil will be the best choice, but if you can’t remember which oil you previously used, feel free to contact our customer service for advice and instructions. In addition, you can read our care instructions or watch our YouTube video about how to care for the tabletop.

I used your oil before, but now it seems different?

faq-arrow

Due to environmental reasons, we have changed the recipe for our oil slightly. The new oil is stronger and must be wiped off immediately. Remember to shake the bottle thoroughly before use, and always use gloves when applying the oil.

Can I use your oil on another tabletop or use another oil on your tabletop?

faq-arrow

You can, but you have to ensure that no other oil has been used in the past since not all oils are efficacious when used simultaneously. We always recommend using the oil offered here in SPEKVA’s online shop.

How should I clean my wooden tabletop?

faq-arrow

A wrung-out cloth with a little lukewarm water will in most cases be sufficient for the daily cleaning. Never use scouring pads or detergents with ammonium chloride or sulfonate.

How to protect a wooden tabletop from water and moisture?

faq-arrow

If you remember to maintain your tabletop with the right oil whenever needed, the tabletop should be well-protected against water and moisture. If you are unsure whether the tabletop needs oil, pour a few drops of water on the tabletop and wait a few minutes. If the droplets are absorbed by the wood, the tabletop should be treated with oil. If the droplets stay on top of the wood, the countertop is protected.

In addition, a tabletop should never be left wet for a long time, so always remember to dry it, e.g., after doing the dishes and water has splashed onto the tabletop.

When assembling, it is always important that a vapour barrier is used above the dishwasher opening to protect the tabletop from steam. The same applies to the hob and the sealing of the sink. Vapour barrier and instructions are included in the delivery package.

Can you put hot pots and pans on a wooden tabletop?

Can wood be mixed with other materials, such as steel, granite, and marble?

faq-arrow

Wood is the perfect match for hard materials, coloured elements, and even the classic white kitchen. Wood is suitable for mixing with different materials and it has a certain ability to add warmth, peace, and depth to the ambience. A large or small wooden tabletop will tie the kitchen together and also be beneficial for the acoustics and indoor climate.

Does wood have an impact on the indoor climate?

faq-arrow

Yes, wood is a “living” natural material that will help regulate the indoor climate.
